GGG vs Canelo: Live stream, time & prediction

GGG vs Canelo: The day has come to an end tonight with the mega fight between, Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (37-0, 33 KO) will stake his WBA, IBF and WBC middleweight titles against Canelo Alvarez (49-1-1, 34 KO) at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

There’s so much on the line in this fight. It wouldn’t be an overstatement to say this is the most important fight in the sport since Floyd Mayweather Jr. battled Manny Pacquiao in 2015.

You could argue this is even bigger because this fight is designed to begin a legacy rather than to cement one. Alvarez is 27 and his biggest paydays could be ahead of him.

Golovkin is 35, but he’s shown no signs of slowing down and he’s definitely searching for his largest purses.

The boxing and entertainment world will take notice as these two elite fighters clash to see who holds sway in the 160-pound division and in the sport. Here are the 10 things you should know about Canelo vs. GGG.

How To Watch GGG vs Canelo

The show will get underway at 8 p.m. ET and it will broadcast exclusively on pay-per-view by HBO. Check with your local cable provider for ordering details.

Canelo vs GGG

There are reports suggesting both fighters are guaranteed $15 million, but Canelo is set to earn a higher percentage of the pay-per-view split. That deal could be real and it could also include some other elements. However, according to the Nevada State Athletic Commission, the purses for both men is substantially lower.

According to Oddsshark, Golovkin is the minus-150 favorite while Canelo is a plus-125 underdog. Forbes boxing and odds expert Peter Kahn thinks betting on Canelo to win outright is the smartest play. Kahn wrote:

Canelo had a much easier time in his last fight. He simply beat up Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. for 12 rounds en route to a unanimous-decision win in May. The bout with Golovkin was announced immediately after this fight was over.

Golovkin Has To Win, Or Look Good

GGG has the titles, the spotless record and a resume filled with opponents that force you to question whether he’s ever been truly tested as a pro. To put it plainly, most of the pressure is on him to win, or at least look good in defeat.

If Golovkin loses convincingly, it’ll validate the criticism of those who scream he hasn’t beaten anyone. If GGG loses in a great fight, there will be a cry for a rematch. He’ll get an even bigger payday and his brand will grow even more.

Beyond Titles

GGG vs Canelo Predictions

I think Canelo is in a real fight against a strong guy who’s determined. If I had to pick somebody, I would go with Golovkin. But one thing we know is in Las Vegas, you can’t beat Canelo Alvarez on a decision. … They did it to me, so why wouldn’t they do it to Golovkin. On top of that, one judge had it a draw when Canelo fought Floyd Mayweather. They did it to Mayweather, they did it to me. You have to knock out Canelo to beat him.

Even Mayweather weighed in on the fight. He was simple and definitive when asked who he thought would win by Hoopjab. Mayweather said: “Canelo, knocks Triple G out.”

Expert Predictions

There’s no consensus among Forbes boxing writers. Kahn sees Canelo winning by decision. He said:

“I am going to pick Saul Canelo Alvarez to win a 12 round decision utilizing a balanced attack, picking his moments to fire off shots in bursts, managing the distance and cementing himself as the top dog in the sport on Saturday night.”

Katzowitz likes Golovkin.

“Alvarez has never faced anybody with the thudding power of Golovkin, and though Alvarez’s chin has not yet been seriously dented, Golovkin will put him in trouble late in the fight,” says Katzowitz. “Alvarez will survive until the end, but Golovkin will give him the hardest fight of his life. Give it to Golovkin by unanimous decision.”

I like Canelo to win by late stoppage. I believe Team Canelo has studied the success Jacobs had against Golovkin and Kell Brook before him. They will implement the requisite wrinkles to give GGG issues, and Alvarez’s power will make Golovkin absorb punishment he didn’t have to endure against Brook or Jacobs.

A body assault will have Golovkin weakened in the late rounds and a fresher Canelo will force the referee or corner’s hand.
